Digital Manufacturing Centre (DMC) - Empowering Innovation through NX with Kaizen PLM

Kaizen PLM worked closely with the Digital Manufacturing Centre (DMC) to implement Siemens NX™ as part of their end-to-end additive manufacturing solution. Through this partnership, DMC has been able to optimise production workflows, reduce part weight, and deliver exceptional results to customers across sectors—from motorsport to medical.

Headquarters: Silverstone, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom
Industry: Aerospace, Automotive, Marine, Medical
Software Used: Siemens NX

The Digital Manufacturing Centre

DMC is an end-to-end additive manufacturing services provider delivering end-use-ready components to customers across a wide range of industries. The company’s capabilities include extensive experience in designing parts for additive, as well as manufacturing, which takes place at a state-of-the-art facility located at Silverstone Park, one of the UK’s foremost technology hubs.

"Siemens NX has been instrumental in accelerating our innovation and maintaining our competitive edge in the additive manufacturing space. Its integrated tools support our entire workflow—from design to production—enabling us to deliver complex, high-performance parts faster and more efficiently. For us, it's not just a software choice—it's a strategic enabler of growth."

— Kieron Salter, CEO, Digital Manufacturing Centre

Taking an engineering-first approach

Additive manufacturing (AM) is proving to be a huge advantage for many companies, enabling them to achieve the accelerated development that was previously available only in specialty areas such as the motor sport sector, where speedy production of one-off parts is a regular requirement. In spite of this benefit, there is one significant challenge: the specific requirements of the AM process sometimes take precedence over the design and optimization of components. Recognising this potential limitation led to the founding of the Digital Manufacturing Centre (DMC).

The DMC went live in the spring of 2021. In purpose-built premises at the world-renowned Silverstone Park, it is both a digitally connected production facility and an innovation hub with a multi-disciplinary team. Providing services in polymer and metal additive manufacturing as well being vertically integrated for machining, inspection and post processing, the company delivers full traceability throughout the production process. It works with customers across every industry from aerospace and defence to marine and medical.

The Challenges

  • Establish credibility across multiple industries

  • Gain market share rapidly as a new venture

  • Ensure the quality and repeatability of additive manufactured parts

The Kaizen PLM Solution

Working alongside the DMC team, Kaizen PLM deployed NX, a powerful Siemens solution, to enable a fully integrated design-to-manufacture workflow. This provides all the capabilities required for additive manufacturing and enables users to create and optimise parts, including those with highly complex geometry. The result is an optimised design that can be printed in 3D.

This included:

  • Supporting DMC’s engineering-first approach with NX’s advanced modelling and topology optimisation tools

  • Streamlining communication between design and additive manufacturing through end-to-end connectivity

  • Ensuring data consistency across machines and processes with NX’s integrated platform

Results

  • Delivered a fully optimised design-to-manufacture workflow

  • Reduced production time and increased efficiency

  • Achieved a 50% weight reduction in a key automotive component

  • Validated changes using NX’s simulation and optimisation tools

"I've been using Siemens NX for the past three years, and in my experience it’s the most effective solution for design for additive manufacturing. It’s intuitive and perfectly suited to the advanced engineering we do at the Digital Manufacturing Centre. With the support of our software partner, Kaizen PLM, we're confident NX is the right platform for our continued success."

— Yassir Khalique, Applications Development Engineer, Digital Manufacturing Centre

Looking Ahead

Kaizen PLM continues to support DMC with ongoing consulting and training as they expand their operations and continue pushing the boundaries of what's possible in additive manufacturing.
