Discover the latest enhancements to cloud-based CAD, designed to help you model faster, work more efficiently and bring your ideas to life.

Designcenter X NX Essentials continues to evolve, giving designers and engineers access to powerful CAD capabilities through a flexible, browser-based environment. The latest 2609 release introduces a range of improvements across 3D modelling, assembly design, technical drawings and the overall user experience.

Whether you are developing new products, refining existing designs or collaborating with colleagues, these enhancements are designed to make everyday engineering workflows more efficient.

In this blog, we explore some of the key updates in Designcenter X NX Essentials 2609 and what they mean for your design process.

Expanded assembly design capabilities

Assembly design is an essential part of product development, and the latest release brings new tools to help users position components, define movement and communicate design intent.

New assembly constraints and joints

New constraint types, including centre constraint, cylindrical joint and slider joint, give designers greater control over how components are positioned and move within an assembly.

These additions make it easier to define realistic component relationships, whether you need to control rotation, allow movement along an axis or position components accurately between faces.

Improved assembly visualisation

Manual explode has been introduced, allowing users to move and rotate components using the Smart Triad. This provides more control when creating exploded assembly views and makes it easier to communicate how a product fits together.

Users can also copy components directly from the Assembly Navigator using drag-and-drop workflows, helping to simplify component reuse and assembly creation.

Further improvements include expanded access to standard parts across multiple global standards and performance enhancements when working with large assemblies.

More flexible 3D modelling and design tools

Designcenter X NX Essentials 2609 introduces new capabilities to help designers create, modify and refine geometry with greater flexibility.

Sketch patterns and chamfers

The new sketch pattern functionality allows users to replicate sketch geometry in linear or circular arrangements, making it easier to create repeated features without manually recreating each element.

Sketch chamfer also provides greater control when adding detail to sketches, helping designers create accurate geometry more efficiently.

Improved model editing

New delete body and delete face capabilities make it easier to remove unwanted geometry while maintaining associativity in the history tree.

These features can be suppressed to restore geometry when needed, giving designers more flexibility when exploring design changes.

Core modelling commands have also been enhanced. Extrude, revolve and replace face now support draft and thin feature parameters, while shell improvements provide greater control over offset direction.

Together, these updates help streamline the process of creating and refining 3D models.

Enhanced technical drawings and detailing

Accurate technical drawings remain essential for communicating design intent and supporting manufacturing. The latest release expands drawing capabilities to help designers create more complete and controlled documentation.

Edit embedded drawings within the same part file

Users can now edit embedded drawings directly within the same NX part file. This makes it easier to move between 3D modelling and drawing creation without unnecessary workflow interruptions.

More control over drawing annotations

New detailing capabilities include:

  • Centre marks.

  • Centrelines.

  • Pitch circle diameter annotations.

  • Expanded dimension and annotation settings.

  • Improved drawing view controls.

These additions help designers communicate important manufacturing information more clearly and create drawings that better reflect their design intent.

Sheet metal bend tables

For sheet metal workflows, the addition of bend tables allows manufacturing information such as bend radius, angle and direction to be included directly in drawings.

This can help improve communication between design and manufacturing teams and make drawings more useful for production.

A smoother, more intuitive user experience

Alongside new design functionality, Designcenter X NX Essentials 2609 includes improvements designed to make the software easier to navigate and use.

Personalised user experience

Users can select personas to align mouse and keyboard behaviour with NX or other mainstream CAD systems. This can help reduce the learning curve for users who are familiar with different CAD environments.

Easier feature management

Feature dependencies can now be understood more easily through visual highlighting in the history tree, helping users identify relationships between features and understand how changes may affect their models.

Direct sketch editing also allows users to modify geometry more quickly without having to navigate through multiple features.

Additional improvements include release update notifications, clearer product version visibility and simplified file opening workflows.

What does this mean for designers and engineers?

The 2609 release brings together improvements across the design process, from early sketching and 3D modelling through to assembly development and technical documentation.

For design teams, these enhancements can help support:

  • Faster design iteration – More flexible modelling and sketching tools make it easier to explore ideas and refine geometry.

  • Improved assembly workflows – New constraints, joints and visualisation tools provide greater control over component relationships.

  • Better design communication – Enhanced drawing and annotation capabilities help communicate design intent and manufacturing requirements.

  • A more accessible CAD experience – Usability improvements and the browser-based environment help make CAD workflows more flexible for modern engineering teams.
